Your Complete Tutorial on VAE Powder | From Rookie to Pro
VAE (Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene Copolymer Emulsion) is a high-performance, water-soluble polymer emulsion. It is an important downstream product of VAE emulsion. VAE powder is safe, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. It is one of the most commonly used types of redispersible polymer powder.
VAE powder is widely used in construction materials, adhesives, coatings, and cement modification. It enhances the bonding strength, water resistance, and flexibility of materials, making them more durable, resistant to aging, and less prone to cracking. This green, fine chemical product is indispensable in our daily lives.
Things you should know about VAE
What is VAE?
VAE (Vinyl Acetate-Ethylene Copolymer Emulsion) is a high-performance polymer emulsion produced from vinyl acetate and ethylene as the main raw materials, combined with other additives through an emulsion polymerization process. It is known for its high performance and eco-friendly properties.
How is VAE produced?
🟢 Main Raw Materials: Vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers
🟢 Additional Additives: Initiators, emulsifiers, and dispersing agents
🟢 Process: Semi-continuous emulsion polymerization
🟢 Form: High-molecular-weight emulsion
🟢 Characteristics: Non-toxic, odorless, environmentally friendly, and excellent adhesive properties
Applications of VAE
VAE is widely used in construction and home decoration. It improves material properties such as bonding strength, water resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and aging resistance. It is an ideal material for interior wall paints, roofing waterproof coatings, and fireproof coatings.
Things you should know about VAE Powder
What is VAE Powder?
VAE powder is an important downstream product of VAE emulsion. While the VAE emulsion is water-based and challenging to transport, VAE powder solves this issue. It retains the same performance as VAE emulsion.
China’s WOTAIchem™ has developed high-performance VAE powders like T-5046N. These products are created through spray drying, and when mixed with water, they can re-emulsify to return to their original state.
Properties of VAE Powder
VAE redispersible powder (VAE RDP) forms a film after mixing with water. When left on glass for 24 hours, it creates a plastic-like thin film with flexibility and water resistance.
🟢 Water Mixing Ratios: Depending on the brand and model, VAE RDP is typically mixed with water at a ratio of 20%–50%.
🟢 Mixing Instructions: First, add water to a container, then slowly add the VAE RDP while stirring evenly until a uniform adhesive liquid forms. Avoid excessive stirring, as this may affect the adhesive’s performance.
Advantages of VAE Powders Compared to Emulsions
1. Convenience in Storage and Transportation:
Redispersible powders are white and free of stability issues found in liquid emulsions, making them easier to package, store, and transport. They are enzyme-free, eliminating bacterial growth concerns, and have a longer shelf life. They are also freeze-resistant and easy to maintain.
2. Ease of Use:
Simply mix the powder with water, then add it to cement, sand, or other materials to use immediately.
3. Cost-Effectiveness:
The smaller particle size of redispersible powders speeds up mixing and application, optimizing processing efficiency. Additionally, their compact packaging reduces transportation costs.
VAE Powder Characteristics:
🟢 Flexibility: The addition of ethylene in the VAE molecular chain acts as a built-in plasticizer, making the polymer chains more flexible and ensuring long-lasting softness.
🟢 Resistance to Acids and Alkalis: VAE powder remains stable in both weak acidic and weak alkaline conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
🟢 UV Aging Resistance: VAE polymers have built-in plasticity that prevents degradation over time, giving the emulsion excellent UV stability. Even after forming a film, this stability is retained.
🟢 Good Compatibility: VAE powder can mix well with most additives, pigments, fillers, and both high- and low-molecular-weight water-soluble polymers, such as dispersants, wetting agents, antifreeze agents, defoamers, preservatives, and flame retardants, without clumping.
🟢 Excellent Film-Forming Ability: VAE emulsions typically form films at temperatures as low as 5°C. These films effectively block water droplets.
🟢 Strong Adhesion: VAE powder provides excellent adhesion to materials like fibers, wood, paper, plastic films, aluminum foil, cement, and ceramics.
Construction Grade VAE Redispersible Powder (VAE RDP) in Dry Mortar
▪️Improves Compressive and Flexural Strength:
Even a small amount of redispersible powder can enhance the mortar’s strength to meet performance requirements.
▪️Enhances Impact Toughness:
The addition of polymer powder increases the elongation of the mortar, improving its resistance to impact. It also provides excellent stress distribution properties.
▪️Boosts Adhesion Performance:
The adhesive mechanism relies on the adsorption and diffusion of macromolecules on the substrate surface. The polymer powder also has certain penetrative properties. When used together with cellulose ethers, it thoroughly wets the substrate surface, making the surface properties of the substrate and new plaster layer similar, thereby enhancing adsorption and significantly improving adhesion.
▪️Reduces Elastic Modulus:
Lowering the elastic modulus enhances the deformability of the mortar and reduces cracking issues.
▪️Provides Excellent Alkali Resistance:
The addition of polymer powder ensures long-term durability even in alkaline environments.
Recommended Applications of VAE Powder
· Exterior wall insulation mortar
· Interior and exterior wall putty
· Decorative mortar
· Cement extrusion boards
· Tile adhesive mortar
· Self-leveling mortar
· Rigid waterproof mortar
· Eco-friendly diatom mud
· Tile grouts
· Interface mortar
· Repair mortar
· Adhesive and plastering gypsum
Packaging and Storage
🟢Storage: Store in a cool, dry place.
🟢Shelf Life: Six months is recommended. Use as early as possible during summer. Storing in high-temperature or humid environments increases the risk of clumping.
🟢Usage: Once opened, use the entire bag if possible. If not, reseal the bag tightly to prevent moisture absorption from the air.
