6 Easy Steps to Apply Your Wall Putty with HPMC?
What could be the reasons for wall putty coming off during the rainy season? How to solve this problem?

Wall putty coming off is a common issue during the rainy season. The possible causes are:

1.Insufficient Cement Addition:
Not using enough cement in the mixture can weaken the putty, making it more susceptible to damage and peeling.

2.Adding PVA:
Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) is not water-resistant. Using PVA in the putty mix can result in the putty absorbing moisture and coming off.

3.Excess Sodium Gluconate:
Adding too much sodium gluconate can reduce the strength of the cement, leading to a less durable putty that is more likely to peel off.


For exterior walls, ensure that the amount of white cement in the water-resistant putty is at least 30%.


1.Add 5-10% lime (quicklime) to enhance the water-resistant effect.

2.Keep the amount of sodium gluconate to 0.15% of the cement weight to maintain the strength of the putty.

However, you can’t do that without wall putty. Your wall painting depends on wall putty design in the first place. it’s the fundamental thing. Wall putty makes your painting strong and long-lasting. You may consider to take the following steps:


  • Clean the walls. Use sandpaper to polish the surface.
  • Mix putty with water in the right ratio, refer to the user guideline.
  • Apply the first layer of putty. leave it for 6-8 hours to dry out.
  • Avoid overcoating. The maximum thickness should be 1.5mm.
  • If the first layer isn’t good enough, apply a second layer.
Is there a relationship between the powdering of putty powder and HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose)?

Wall putty powdering issue is mainly related to the quality of calcium hydrate (lime). It has little to do with HPMC. The powdering is influenced by the low calcium content and improper ratios of CaO and Ca(OH)2 in the calcium hydrate.


If there is any connection to HPMC, it would be related to its water retention properties. Poor water retention of HPMC could contribute to powdering. However, HPMC itself does not participate in any reaction.

Bubbles may occur due to excessive water content or applying a new layer of putty before the underlying layer has dried. We recommend to add antifoaming agent in your putty formula.

What is the difference between waterproof putty and normal putty?

Waterproof putty is specifically formulated to resist moisture and prevent water penetration. Making it suitable for damp or wet areas. RDP and HPMC are recommended to add to the formulation. Normal putty lacks this water-resistant feature and is used in dry environments.
