HPMC is a more cost-effective replacement for HEC in many applications. It provides better performance in some cases. However, HEC is slightly more expensive with better stability and is widely used in construction. There are significant differences between them.

1. Chemical structure: HPMC is a chemically modified form of cellulose, replacing some hydroxyl groups with hydroxypropyl and methyl groups. On the other hand, HEC is a pure form of cellulose, modified by adding ethylene oxide groups to enhance its water solubility.
