Cellulose Fiber Manufacturing Process Explained: From Raw Material to Final Fiber
Cellulose fiber is a polymer material extracted from natural plant sources such as wood pulp or cotton. Its main component is cellulose.
The chemical structure of cellulose fiber is a linear chain of β-1,4-glucose units. This structure allows strong hydrogen bonding between molecules, forming both tightly packed crystalline areas and less ordered amorphous regions. These features give the fiber high strength and chemical stability.
Cellulose Fiber Properties
✅ Stable Structure
Strong hydrogen bonds between cellulose molecules create highly crystalline regions, giving the fiber good physical strength and thermal stability.
✅ Water Insolubility
Due to its high molecular weight and crystalline structure, water molecules cannot easily break the intermolecular forces. As a result, cellulose fiber does not dissolve in water or most organic solvents. This makes it effective in wet environments like concrete, where it helps enhance structure.
✅ Hydrophilic
Although it doesn’t dissolve in water, cellulose contains many hydroxyl groups (–OH), giving it good moisture absorption and water retention. This helps improve internal curing in mortar and concrete.
✅ Alkali Resistance
Cellulose fiber can tolerate the alkaline environment of cement-based materials and does not degrade quickly, making it suitable for construction use.
✅ Biodegradability
Natural and most regenerated cellulose fibers can be broken down by enzymes from microorganisms like fungi and bacteria. These enzymes convert the fiber into glucose, which eventually turns into carbon dioxide and water. This makes cellulose an eco-friendly material.
Types of Cellulose Fibers / Cellulose Fibers Examples
Main Types of Cellulose Fiber
| Type | Introduction & Features |
|
Natural Cellulose Fibers | Plant-Based Fibers: Include cotton, flax, and other plant fibers. Sourced from plant cell walls. These are traditional natural cellulosic fibers. They have good strength and water absorption. Often used in concrete for reinforcement, shrinkage control, and crack resistance. |
|
Regenerated Cellulose Fibers (Man-made Fibers) | Viscose Fiber: A common regenerated cellulose fiber made from natural sources of cellulose fiber, mainly wood pulp, through chemical processing. It offers good moisture absorption, dyeability, and comfort. Biodegradable and widely used in textiles and hygiene products. |
| Lyocell Fiber: Produced with eco-friendly solvents from natural cellulose. It’s breathable, soft, strong, and easy to process. Common in high-end textiles. | |
| Modal Fiber: An upgraded type of viscose fiber. Softer and stronger. Good moisture absorption. Often used in underwear and household textiles. | |
| Acetate Fiber: Chemically modified cellulose fiber. Has good gloss and color. Often used in clothing and decorative fabrics. |
WOTAIchem™ Cellulose Fiber Manufacturing Process
At WOTAIchem, our WOTAIcell® series of cellulose fibers for concrete reinforcement are produced using a proprietary process that combines ionic liquid technology and nano-modification. This advanced method allows full control from raw material purification to final functionalization.
Core Technology Highlights
🏅 Green Manufacturing System
Uses ionic liquids (ILs) to dissolve cellulose, replacing toxic carbon disulfide and strong alkalis in traditional viscose processes. No harmful waste is discharged.
🏅 Breakthrough in Alkali Resistance
Dual-modification treatment (surface silanization + molecular chain etherification) helps the fiber retain over 85% of its strength after 28 days in a pH 13 solution.
🏅 Smart Quality Control
AI vision systems monitor fiber length and dispersion in real-time (variation ≤ 5%). Production is certified under ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 for quality, environment, and safety.
How to Make Cellulose Fiber
1. Raw Material Selection
Cellulose fibers used in concrete must have high cellulose content and proper fiber form.
WOTAIchem uses raw materials with ≥70% cellulose and purified cotton linter (92%). Components are checked in real time using NIR spectroscopy.
2. Pre-Treatment: Removing Impurities
Impurities like lignin, hemicellulose, pectin, and oils reduce strength and alkali resistance. WOTAIchem removes them through:
▪️Mechanical Treatment: Crushing into 2–5 cm pieces, sieving out sand and dirt.
▪️Alkali Treatment: Soaking in NaOH solution to break lignin-cellulose bonds and remove hemicellulose. Washed to neutral pH (6–7) to avoid leftover alkali.
3. Fiber Separation
The pre-treated material becomes fiber bundles rich in cellulose. We use:
▪️Refining/Grinding: Disk mills grind bundles into individual fibers (20–100 μm in diameter), adjusting length via pressure and speed.
▪️High-Pressure Homogenization: For finer grades like nanocellulose, pressure reduces fiber to micro- or nanoscale.
4. Functional Modification
▪️ Alkali Resistance:
Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) coats the fiber surface, making it stable in high-alkali concrete environments.
▪️ Interface Enhancement:
Laser etching roughens the surface, increasing bonding with cement paste.
5. Post-Treatment & Sorting
▪️Drying: Four-stage drying plus ultrasonic vibration reduces moisture.
▪️Cutting/Forming: Fibers are cut to preset lengths (e.g., 6 mm, 12 mm) per concrete mix needs.
6. Quality Control
▪️Performance Tests: Tensile strength, modulus, and alkali resistance after 28 days in pH 13 (strength ≥ 80%).
▪️Consistency: Fiber length and diameter kept within 10% tolerance.
7. Smart Packaging
Moisture-Proof: Three-layer co-extruded PE/PA/PE bags with humidity indicator, keeping moisture content under 10% during transport.

Applications of Cellulose Fiber
Thanks to its mechanical strength, compatibility, and eco-friendliness, cellulose fiber is widely used across industries.
🔘 Construction Materials: Concrete and Cement Products
Cellulose Fibers Used in Concrete
Improve crack resistance and toughness. Fibers disperse into a 3D network that prevents plastic shrinkage cracks and boosts durability. Ideal for roads and bridges.
Cellulose Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Stronger bonding between fiber and cement matrix increases tensile strength by 15–25%, reduces water permeability, and extends service life.
Cellulose Fiber Cement Board
Made from cement and cellulose fiber, these boards are strong yet flexible, with bending strength of 8–12 MPa. They are fire- and moisture-resistant, suitable for walls, ceilings, and panels.
🔘 Road Engineering: Asphalt Reinforcement
Cellulose Fiber for Asphalt
Enhances mix stability at high temperatures and improves cracking resistance at low temperatures. The fiber’s oil-absorbing nature reduces asphalt use and cost. Its biodegradability makes it environmentally friendly.
🔘 Decorative and Acoustic Materials: Ceilings and Panels
Cellulose Fiber Ceiling Tiles
Made from cellulose fiber and lightweight fillers (like gypsum or perlite). These tiles are light, sound-absorbing, and insulating. Surface textures vary for aesthetic and acoustic functions—ideal for offices, malls, and sound-sensitive areas.
