Is Putty Required for Exterior Walls?

Putty is used to smooth out the base surface of exterior walls, making it ready for painting. It’s not just about making the wall look good—it also affects how long the paint and the wall will last.

Is putty required for exterior walls? Actually, not all exterior walls must be coated with putty.

Basic Principles for Using Wall Putty

When it comes to using wall putty, here are some key points to remember:

✅If you can avoid using putty, do so—or use as little as possible. Putty is not necessary in all situations.
✅Apply putty in a thin layer.
✅Choose high-quality putty for better results.

Is Putty Required for Exterior Walls

For example, if the exterior wall is already smooth and meets the requirements for painting, you can skip putty. Just apply a primer and then the paint. This helps avoid problems caused by low-quality putty or poor application. Also, external walls usually don’t need to be as smooth as interior walls.

When Can You Skip Putty?

  • Old buildings being renovated: If the wall is solid and smooth, you can apply waterproof paint directly.

  • Self-built houses: If you prefer a rough, natural texture, you can skip the putty step.

What Kind of Putty Should Be Used on Exterior Walls?

Exterior wall putty needs to be strong and durable. Usually, it’s made from a mix of high-quality polymer resins (redispersible polymer powder or emulsion) and cement.

For insulated exterior wall systems, where flexibility is important, it’s better to use putty made with polymer emulsion, which gives better flexibility and cost-efficiency.

For rough exterior walls, regular putty may not work well—it requires more material and thicker layers, which can crack during drying. In such cases, coarse leveling putty is used. This type of putty contains large filler particles (like 80-mesh heavy calcium carbonate), often mixed with finer fillers (140–200 mesh) to balance it out.

Special Cases

Textured (sand-like) exterior paints usually don’t need putty. But in modern insulation systems, the base surface is rough because it uses crack-resistant mortar. This increases paint consumption if putty is not applied. So, special putty with strong bonding strength is often used before applying textured paints.

For elastic exterior paints (like silicone-acrylic types), people often use flexible putty to build up the paint thickness. This helps cover small cracks and reduces the amount of paint needed. Then, a final elastic topcoat is applied. This system is commonly used and gives good results.

It can hide the fine cracks in the wall. The wall covered with putty always smooth and even. But it needs skills, or the wall may be mess. One drawback is if there’s hollow inside the wall, applying putty will hide this issue deeply and the issue will be remained even longer.
